Job Description:
The RSD division provides legal services to DSHS and DCYF, the agencies responsible for Adult Protective Services, as well as Child Protective Services, Child Welfare Services, Adult Protective Services, and others. This is a high-volume litigation division. RSD covers multiple juvenile court calendars per week, Superior Court trials, administrative hearings, administrative appeals and Court of Appeals cases, as well as providing client advice. The subject matter areas include vulnerable adult guardianships and protection orders, child abuse and neglect, termination of parental rights, and licensing of foster homes, day care facilities, adult family homes and boarding homes.
Job Responsibilities:
In support of the mission and values of the Attorney General’s Office, this position supports Assistant Attorneys General by performing complex legal support functions. Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Communicate with APS social workers, draft form pleadings necessary for obtaining vulnerable adult protection orders and for establishing guardianships for vulnerable adults.
- Conduct criminal and bankruptcy background checks. Obtain additional evidence such as criminal convictions or other records as needed for use in administrative hearings.
- Independently compose and prepare pleadings for trial or hearings per attorney direction.
- Examine documents to assure accuracy; ensure the proper and timely filing of legal pleadings in the appropriate courts.
- Facilitate service of protection orders and orders to show cause through law enforcement, track cases to make sure service of process is completed timely.
- Preparation of subpoenas and subpoenas duces tecum compelling witnesses to appear at trials and hearings.
- Enter legal documents and case specific correspondence into the document and calendar tabs of the case management database per AGO and Division business rules and Critical Events Policy.
- Independently track and update status of attorney’s cases by obtaining due dates from court documents, or court rules and/or critical court dates and deadlines; advise attorney of upcoming commitments, deadlines and special items needing attention.
- Check legal citations, references and quotation information in briefs.
Job Requirements:
- Option 1: High School diploma or equivalent and four years of experience in a legal environment in support of an attorney, administrative law judge(s), review judge(s) or equivalent;
- Option 2: One year as a Legal Assistant 2;
- Option 3: A two-year degree in Legal Secretary Studies, Paralegal Studies or related field of study plus 2 years of legal office experience. A Bachelor’s degree may substitute for the Legal Secretary or Paralegal degree.
