Job Description:
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) serves the Nation by providing reliable scientific information to describe and understand the Earth; minimize loss of life and property from natural disasters; manage water, biological, energy, and mineral resources; and enhance and protect our quality of life. The mission is accomplished through data collection, research, and comprehensive studies and information services in the broad disciplines of hydrology, geology, biology, and geography.
Job Responsibilities:
As the leader of the Department of the Interior’s geospatial mapping and Earth observation portfolio, the Director, National Geospatial Directorate ensures the effective implementation of diverse mission responsibilities including program oversight for the complex Landsat 9 ground system development project, maintaining ongoing Landsat 7 and 8 operations, conducting interdisciplinary geographic research, expanding applications for remotely sensed data, and safeguarding and providing access to the Nation’s archive of geospatial data. The Director, National Geospatial Directorate also provides leadership in geospatial mapping through geospatial data acquisition, quality assurance, and integration; management of national level geospatial foundation databases; data standards and specification development; software applications and tools development and maintenance; derived cartographic product and service development and production; data archive; data products and service dissemination; and geospatial information science research. The Director, National Geospatial Directorate oversees international coordination efforts related to hazards, natural disaster monitoring, and emergency response.
Job Requirements:
- A background investigation is required for this position. It is not a prerequisite to apply, however, the selectee must possess the ability to obtain and maintain a background investigation with a TOP SECRET/Sensitive Compartmented Information clearance as a condition of placement in this position. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

- OPM must authorize any employment offers we make to current/former (within the last 5 years) political Schedule A, Schedule C, or Non-career SES employees in the executive branch. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political employee in the executive branch, you must disclose that to the Human Resources Office.
- Employees of the USGS are subject to the provisions of the Title 43, U.S. Code, Section 31(a) and may not according to this legislation and related regulations: (a) have any personal or private interest, direct or indirect, in lands, or mineral wealth of such lands, whose title is in the United States; (b) execute surveys or examinations for private parties or corporations; or (c) have any substantial personal or private interest, direct or indirect, in any private mining or mineral enterprise doing business in the United States, except where specifically authorized by the Director, USGS.
