Job Description:

This position is a Surface and Corrosion Engineer for the materials engineering department based in Cape Canaveral Florida. The role is highly multidisciplinary and this individual will assess and provide engineering solutions to corrosion, oxidation, and wear conditions of the SpaceX vehicles for reusability efforts. The ideal candidate is an individual familiar with corrosion assessment and prevention, coatings, and hardware contamination assessment and prevention. This position requires the ability to travel to Hawthorne, California up to 35%.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Apply corrosion knowledge and skills to assess, repair, install, troubleshoot, analyze, and perform other predictive and preventative maintenance tasks on assigned vehicle components
  • Maintain working knowledge of regulatory requirements, perform associated required tasks, and complete required documentation per SpaceX specifications and other external specification such us NASA, OSHA, ASTM, NACE, ASME
  • Investigate and analyze corrosive conditions for existing vehicle fleet
  • Evaluate protective coatings (polyurethane, urethane, conversion coating, inorganic coatings) condition including internal, external and atmospheric systems and make paint and coatings repairs
  • Apply corrosion inhibitors and corrosion protective compounds on locations exposed to corrosive environments
  • Sample contaminates for flying hardware
  • Generate and maintain the repair reports with information about corrosion findings, specific locations, repair process and acceptance criteria
    Train our inspectors and technicians

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in materials, chemical engineering, or a technical discipline
    1+ years of experience with corrosion, coatings, paints or/and electrochemistry
  • Master’s degree in materials science or engineering
  • Familiarity with polyurethane paints, anodize coatings, corrosion protection compounds and corrosion inhibitors
  • Ability to communicate and document technical information to a mixed engineering audience
  • Experience with FTIR spectrometer, scanning electron microscope, optical microscope, and other laboratory instruments.
  • Ability to train others in discipline job tasks and to confirm knowledge, skills and abilities of others as an evaluator for partnership skill qualification program dependent upon position level
