Job Description:

The purpose of this position is to lead and grow the Vehicle Intelligence team that works in the field of behavior generation, prediction, maneuver and path planning for Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Advanced driver assistance and autonomous driving systems (SAE levels 2-4) for urban and highway driving are the focus. The Vehicle Intelligence team is part of the Autonomous Driving team at MBRDNA and part of the global Mercedes-Benz R&D development team. Major contributions of the team are overall architecture, design, functional algorithms, embedded driving software of our development and customer vehicles as well as tools and processes necessary for successful software development and verification & validation.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop and enable individual contributors, help them to maximize their impact, foster a good team spirit and care about the wellbeing of each team member
  • Develop and update a strategic and tactical plan how to reach the team’s objectives, given the dependencies between recourses, timelines and content
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other teams within MBRDNA
  • Lead and grow the Vehicle Intelligence team that develops solutions in the area of advanced vehicle functions and components, which include behavior generation, prediction, maneuver and path planning for automated and autonomous Mercedes-Benz vehicles
  • Interact with US and Silicon Valley companies and organizations to develop and maintain strategic partnerships
  • Develop and transfer product innovations into future Mercedes-Benz customer vehicles
  • Drive the hiring process for the team
  • Provide and cultivate the day-to-day interface and technical liaison to the dedicated MBRDNA stakeholders in the global Mercedes-Benz R&D organization and advanced engineering departments
  • Lead and manage in an agile environment under changing boundary conditions and uncertainties
  • Execute and support public relations activities for autonomous driving in the U.S.

Job Requirements:

  • Outstanding technical competence in autonomous driving or robotics with a proven track record of innovative accomplishments including software development, artificial intelligence and/or robotics algorithm development, and similar technical fields
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and experience working in a multi-cultural environment
  • Ability to interact with remote locations over different time zones and to create a link between remote locations, Silicon Valley and the Mercedes-Benz R&D organization
  • Entrepreneurial drive with a demonstrated ability to achieve stretch goals in a fast-paced innovative environment and to deliver products through excellent project management abilities
  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Robotics or similar technical field of study, PhD preferred
  • Successful experience in leading, growing and managing an engineering or project team
  • Proven work experience with autonomous vehicles or robotics, software development and project management.
  • Strong technical background in robotics / AD software engineering, own experience with C++ and related tooling required
  • Ability to network and interface with high-tech companies, work within the structures and processes of both the IT and the automotive industry, and operate in a diverse and intercultural work environment.
  • Strong leadership skills to manage and grow a diverse dynamic engineering team through both formal processes and hands-on management
