Drives an ambulance to transport patients to and from County and non-County hospitals and institutions on emergency and non-emergency calls.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Drives an ambulance in compliance with State and local traffic laws and ordinances and County policies and procedures to transport ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients, wheelchair patients and stretcher patients who may be either acute or non-acute to and from their homes and
  • County or non-County health care facilities.
  • Responsible for the safe transportation of the patients and ambulance crew.
  • Determines the ambulance speed and emergency driving conditions for transporting acute stretcher patients.
  • Lifts and transfers patients between beds and stretchers or height-adjustable ambulance cots equipped with wheels.
  • Carries patients in stretchers and wheels patients in stretchers or wheelchairs.
  • Lifts patients into and out of an ambulance and positions them securely in the ambulance.
  • Notifies Ambulance Dispatcher by telephone or radio of traffic accident involving ambulance or any other emergency requiring a change in the route or trip plan such as need for transporting a patient directly to a County hospital or the nearest emergency hospital.
  • Reports any traffic accidents in accordance with California State Motor Vehicle Code and completes required accident reports.
  • Stops ambulance and assists Ambulance Medical Technician in restraining patients who become irrational or violent.

Job Requirements:

  • Two (2) years of experience with an ambulance service of which one (1) year must have been in the capacity of an ambulance driver.
