Drives an ambulance to transport patients to and from County and non-County hospitals and institutions on emergency and non-emergency calls. Job Responsibilities: Drives an ambulance in compliance with State and local traffic laws and ordinances and County policies and procedures to transport ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients, wheelchair patients and stretcher patients who may be either acute or non-acute to and from their homes and County or non-County health care facilities. Responsible for the safe transportation of the patients and ambulance crew. Determines the ambulance speed and emergency driving conditions for transporting acute stretcher patients. Lifts and transfers patients between beds and stretchers or height-adjustable ambulance cots equipped with wheels. Carries patients in stretchers and wheels patients in stretchers or wheelchairs. Lifts patients into and out of an ambulance and positions them securely in the ambulance. Notifies Ambulance Dispatcher by telephone or radio of traffic accident involving ambulance or any other emergency requiring a change in the route or trip plan such as need for transporting a patient directly to a County hospital or the nearest emergency hospital. Reports any traffic accidents in accordance with California State Motor Vehicle Code and completes required accident reports. Stops ambulance and assists Ambulance Medical Technician in restraining patients who become irrational or violent. Job Requirements: Two (2) years of experience with an ambulance service of which one (1) year must have been in the capacity of an ambulance driver.
