Job Description:
Under general supervision, the Firefighter-Paramedic performs fire suppression, fire prevention and rescue operations. Day-to-day duties include responding to emergency medical incidents, structure fires, wildland fires, vehicle accidents, hazardous material incidents, spills, releases, and other types of routine and non-emergency calls for service. The Firefighter-Paramedic must also effectively write incident reports and memoranda, fill out forms, perform public education, make emergency/disaster preparations, maintain station facilities and apparatus, and perform other related and/or special duties as assigned. Firefighter-Paramedics must continuously participate in and complete emergency medical services continuing education credits, firefighting proficiency training, paramedic training, in-house educational programs, and city-wide employee training programs.
Job Responsibilities:
- Responds to emergency calls when summoned; may direct traffic and control crowds; providing basic and advanced life support emergency medical services; responding to and performing fire suppression; respond to spills of fuel or hazardous substances and bomb threats; preparing detailed records and reports/records; providing assistance to the public; ensures understanding and compliance with state, county and departmental policies; complies with all rules, orders and instructions issued by superior officer; may take on the role of Officer including, but not limited to, assuming command of an incident, determining the need for additional resources; administers emergency care; transports victims to the appropriate emergency care facility which may require communications with the medical facility; checks and prepares equipment and/or supplies; cleans, disinfects and maintains medical equipment; throughout the shift maintain the fire station both inside and outside, mopping floors, washing windows, sweeping, shoveling walks/driveways/approaches, cleaning the kitchen and bathrooms; while on shift will inspect and confirm the operating status of the apparatus – checking fluid levels by gauge and manually, operating pumps, ensuring that all equipment is on board and that radios operate properly; conduct fire code inspections; educates public in matters of fire safety, health care and emergency situations; participates in continuing education, training and instruction programs by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled training, drills and classes; ability to read and speak English; participate in physical fitness and mental training; may be assigned to operations, administration, or other roles as necessary; performs related tasks as required or assigned.
Job Requirements:
- Age: Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Education: Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent
- Experience: Possess a valid California EMT-P License
Qualification & Experience:
- California Specialized Training Institute Hazardous Materials FRO or FRO-D certification; California Incident Command Certification System (CICCS) FF1, FF2 or ENGB certification; • American Heart Association ACLS, PALS or PEPP certification. • Six (6) or more months of experience as an Auxiliary Firefighter with the City of San Gabriel Fire Department, or similar Fire Service Agency/District.
