Job Description:
Prince William County Fire and Rescue System (FRS) employees are dedicated to protecting lives and serving our community. We train individuals to provide emergency medical services, fight fires, perform rescues and promote fire safety and prevention. The FRS has a deployment model that includes Paramedic Engines, 24 hour shifts and a 56 hour work week. ++Work station and duty assignment will be determined by the county.++
Job Responsibilities:
- Drives, operates and maintains fire, rescue and EMS apparatus and equipment; Conducts fire prevention inspections and related work; Assists in fire investigation activities; Attends training sessions; Conducts training sessions; Performs salvage operations; Performs rescues from hazardous sites; Performs routine clerical and administrative functions; Presents public education programs.
- Performs basic life support emergency medical and supports advanced life support unit operations;
- Responds and performs during fire and rescue calls;
- Provides immediate emergency care to ill or injured persons; Conducts full range of fire suppression duties;
Job Requirements:
- General knowledge of basic and advanced life support principles and practices – advanced life support and medical care when applicable to work assignment; some knowledge of Prince William County geography; general knowledge of County geography and incident command; general knowledge of the principles and practices of tactical uses of firefighting apparatus and equipment; general knowledge of the principles of hydraulics; some knowledge of firefighting apparatus and equipment; some knowledge of the principles and practices to apply fire prevention codes; some knowledge of tactical uses of firefighting apparatus and equipment; some knowledge of standard office equipment to include computers and applicable software; ability to read and understand policies, rules, instructions and written material pertaining to fire and rescue operations; ability to learn firefighting and basic life support emergency care evolutions, techniques, methods and to apply such information appropriately; ability to follow written and oral directions; ability to exercise prudent judgment during hazardous circumstances; ability to act quickly and effectively during emergencies; ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public, co-workers, and supervisors; ability to present public education programs; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to function and perform at emergency incident scenes; ability to conduct in-station training.
Qualification & Experience:
- Applicant must satisfy all other training, experience, physical, and authorized requirements duly established by the Prince William County Fire and Rescue Association and established by the Prince William County Fire and Rescue Department within the time limits specified therein before obtaining status as a permanent employee;
- Effective October 2012, mandated by the Virginia State Board of Health 12VAC5-31-540, VA EMS Regulations require a criminal background check conducted by the Central Crime Records Exchange and the National Crime Information Center via Virginia State Police; and a driving record transcript from the individual’s state Department of Motor Vehicles.
- If an applicant is applying for a Fire and Rescue Technician I position in the EMS program, applicant must be eligible to hold an EMT-B, EMT-I or EMT-P certification from the State of Virginia. National Registry Certifications or Certifications from other States will require the Virginia Office of EMS to approve legal recognition for Virginia valid certification.
