Job Description:
Under general supervision, the Librarian of Children’s Services plans, develops and provides information and reference assistance, assisting in planning programs and special activities for the Children’s department. Incumbent is responsible for teaching children how to use the library.
Job Responsibilities:
- Provides reference, information and general library assistance to the public, particularly children, in person, by telephone and through other on-demand methods.
- Selects books and other library materials for the Children’s Services division.
- Assists head of the department in executing story time, craft activities, audio-visual presentations and internet accessed programs and presentations.
- Supervises department in the absence of the Supervisor of Children’s.
- Prepares monthly statistical report.
- Submits dates and event information to Supervisor of Children’s Services for approval and markets same through a variety of resources.
- Assists in maintaining order and discipline particularly with reference to the public.
- Coordinates with other Library and City Departments.
Performs database and Internet searches to assists patrons. - Attends professional workshops and meetings to continually update professional skills.
- Assists with displays, booklists and decoration of department.
- Assists and represents the Supervisor of Children’s Services by performing related work activities as assigned..
Job Requirements:
- Standard pre-employment screening and background clearance is required.
- Must have considerable knowledge of library science and children’s literature, permitting the solution of highly complex as well as routine work problems.
- Must have working knowledge of common computer applications and use of the Internet.
- Must have clear, concise oral and written communication skills to prepare and present reports, outreach programs and public speaking engagements.
- English and Spanish bilingual communication skills are not required but preferred.
- Must exemplify professional employee characteristics exhibiting ethical standards, punctuality, excellent attendance, a strong work ethic and a courteous, conscientious and generally businesslike manner in the workplace.
- Must demonstrate effective supervisory, administrative, time management and personnel management skills.
- Must be able to meet departmental goals and objectives, job responsibilities and essential job duties.
