Job Description:

Under general supervision and procedural control from the Aquatics Superintendent, the Jr. Lifeguard monitors to ensure the safety of guests at any outdoor recreation facility by preventing and responding to emergencies. Employee is responsible for implementing specific programs as assigned. Employee prepares standard routine reports and records. Job involves decision making which require sound interpretation and mature judgment. Assists and primarily prevents accidents at any recreation facility, in the water at pools and in the immediate surrounding areas by enforcement of pertinent rules and regulations. The second most important responsibility of a lifeguard is lifesaving rescue and emergency care of accident victims. The employee provides continuous service to the public frequently involving sensitive matters that demand the utmost tact, courtesy and resourcefulness. Job Responsibilities:

  • Assists in programs as assigned at various locations including, but not limited to: Aquatic facilities, McAllen Nature Center and Fireman’s Park.
  • Along with city wide events.
  • Required to work holidays, weekends and evenings.
  • Maintains strict, but courteous enforcement of all rules and regulations included within the manual.
  • Follows orders and requests of the pool manager and/or the Aquatics Superintendent.
  • Maintains constant alertness, is on the lookout, and is ready to assist accidents at any recreation facility, in the water at pools and in the immediate surrounding areas. Each lifeguard must be attentive to actions taken by fellow guards.
  • Performs with extreme prudence, emergency services by rescuing, resuscitating or administering first aid as may be required. On serious accidents, the staff, under direct leadership of the manager, shall be responsible for calling professional emergency medical assistance.
  • Assists in maintaining outdoor recreation and pool facilities in a safe and sanitary condition by performing tasks as requested by the manager or his/her superior.
  • Maintains order in all outdoor recreation facilities, foresees possible trouble and takes necessary steps to prevent it.
  • Maintains courteous, friendly and cheerful attitude towards all guests and fellow employees in the performance of his/her duties.
  • Reports potentially hazardous and unsafe conditions to the pool manager or Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Maintains an acceptable appearance at all times, as to both uniforms and personal hygiene. All lifeguards must wear a modest swimsuit or the uniform, if adopted or recommended by the Parks and Recreation Department, at all times while on duty.
  • Attends all in-service training sessions scheduled by superiors.

Job Requirements:

  • Must have good judgment and knowledge of and willingness to enforce all rules and regulations of the pool.
  • Must be knowledgeable of safety whistle, swimsuit and information for teaching programs.
  • Must be in good or excellent physical condition, mobile and agile.
  • Must be alert, active, responsible and mature individual.
  • Must exhibit special leadership qualities.
  • Must exhibit special and general ability.
  • Must be a strong swimmer with a keen sense of anticipation.
  • Must have obvious maturity of judgment, knowledge of and a willingness to enforce all rules and regulations of the pool.
  • Must be able to promote good public relations for the City.
  • Must be able to meet the public in a courteous manner, using tact and diplomacy.
