Job Description:
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the nation’s health protection agency, is seeking an experienced communications professional to advance our mission to save lives and protects people from health threats. CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and Tuberculosis Prevention (NCHHSTP) seeks a communications professional to serve as a media response specialist who supports the communications activities of the NCHHSTP News Media Team. News media routinely rely on NCHHSTP for expertise in the areas of HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STDs, TB and adolescent and school health. The media response specialist will be responsible for helping ensure that CDC’s science is accurately reported and key public health messages are incorporated into news media coverage. Additionally, by providing timely and effective responses to inquiries, the media response specialist cultivates relationships with journalists that are critical for advancing communication objectives. This position also oversees the NCHHSTP online newsroom and ensures best practices are implemented.
Job Responsibilities:
- Assess the reporter’s information need
- Determine CDC’s role in the story being developed
- Provide background to ensure CDC science is accurately reported
- identify a spokesperson based on the topic and scope of the story
- Prepare the spokesperson by providing the context for the interview, advice on potential challenges and opportunities, consultation on messages, and training or talking points as needed
- Track the requests and coverage for evaluation and environmental scanning
- Correct, clarify, or respond to coverage as needed through calls, letters to the editor, and other media outreach
