Job Description:
This position is located in the Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Office of Field Operations, Regional Office, Division of National Compensation Survey.
Job Responsibilities:
- Develops strategies to gain participation and collect data from critical, highly weighted respondents in numerous labor market surveys for BLS. Negotiates cooperation with high level corporate officials and utilizes alternative collection strategies for maximizing cooperation. Provides guidance and suggestions to wage staff for handling problem companies. Develops and documents special collection approaches geared toward reducing burden for large and critical sample units and exporting these techniques to other field economists throughout the country.
- Develops and tests new data transfer approaches using advanced technology. Assists in the direction of a regional survey response program; works with staff to improve cooperation rates; analyzes refusal trends; and makes recommendations to regional management.
- Provides special services to current and potential respondents such as technical briefings on data uses, and information regarding other economic products available from the public sector. Maintains professional relationships with officials from sampled enterprises as well as the media, trade associations, labor organizations, and others in order to: provide information on local, regional and national publication criteria; explain survey findings and data uses; exchange information on developments relevant to the programs; and discuss survey results to interested groups.
- Develops data collection plans based on a thorough knowledge of the socio-economic conditions of the region or area; knowledge of industry trends and practices; an understanding of the surveys’ conceptual foundation and procedural requirements; knowledge of alternative strategies for maximizing cooperation; and a thorough knowledge of computer systems for electronic reporting.
- Develops and conducts regional training workshops and provides on-the–job training for field staff on the more complex industries and procedures. Works with mentors to ensure that consistent and high quality on-the job training is provided to junior staff. Develops new training approaches to enhance current regional training, and address developmental and training needs for staff.
Job Requirements:
- Must be at least 16 years old and a U.S. Citizen.
- Appointment to this position may require a background investigation.
- Requires supervisory probationary period if requirement has not been met.
