Job Description:

Provides nutrition services to clients at various different clinic sites within the district. Characteristic activities: certifies clients for participation in the WIC program, conducts nutrition assessments and evaluations in the clinic, develops and monitors nutrition care plans and food packages, provides and documents basic nutrition education, provides high risk nutrition counseling and consultations for special needs children and families in WIC, and makes referrals to programs such as Medicaid, Child Health Partnership, Ready Kids and SNAP. Perform finger sticks to obtain blood for hemoglobin checks and obtain anthropometric measurements. Provide nutrition education by group nutrition classes, individual one-on-one appointments and nutrition education follow-up calls. In addition, this position has a vital role in outreach within the community, as well as developing nutrition education tools. Weekly travel required. This position oversees the district’s Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program and acts as our local agency Breastfeeding Coordinator. The Breastfeeding Coordinator functions as district’s contact for all high-risk breastfeeding concerns in addition to breast pump services. The Coordinator prepares and conducts breastfeeding education classes and annual trainings and conducts comprehensive maternal and infant feeding assessments related to lactation. This position coordinates peer counselor services and acts as on-site supervisor for all breastfeeding peer counselors. Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university with major course work in dietetics or nutrition. Two years of work experience in nutrition or dietetics as part of or after the completion of such degree. Knowledge: principles of nutrition across the life cycle; understanding of general prenatal basics and childhood development. Skills: Basic interviewing and counseling skills/abilities to address the nutrition education needs of all socioeconomic and literacy levels; excellent customer service; basic computer skills; good written communication skills. Must have knowledge, skills, and clinical experience related to principles and trends in nutrition, counseling techniques, as well as skills with working with various populations related to nutritional needs/counseling. Per Code of Virginia (Chapter 27.1. Dietitians and Nutritionists, § 54.1-2731), a dietitian or nutritionist must have at least one of the following criteria listed below: 1. (i) received a baccalaureate or higher degree in nutritional sciences, community nutrition, public health nutrition, food and nutrition, dietetics or human nutrition from a regionally accredited college or university and (ii) satisfactorily completed a program of supervised clinical experience approved by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association; 2. Active registration through the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association; 3. An active certificate of the Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists by the Board of Nutrition Specialists; 4. An active accreditation by the Diplomats or Fellows of the American Board of Nutrition; 5. A current license or certificate as a dietitian or nutritionist issued by another state; or 6. The minimum requisite education, training and experience determined by the Board of Health Professions appropriate for such person to hold himself out to be, or advertise or allow himself to be advertised as, a dietitian or nutritionist.
  • Prefer direct maternal and child health & public health nutrition or WIC experience. Prefer candidate with Registered Dietitian License and IBCLC or lactation credential. Prefer Bilingual in Spanish/English.
  • Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check, and E-Verify. The selected candidate must complete a Statement of Personal Economic Interests as a condition of employment, if applicable (Va. Code § 2.2-3114). Other financial, credit, driving, or other background checks prior to employment may be required for certain positions. Twelve-month probationary period is required for all new state employees. A new probation period may be required for successful internal candidates. District events, meetings, emergency operations, etc. may require some weekend and/or evening hours. A valid State Driver’s License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency.
